Barack Obama, President of United States

Standing behind a podium in the Oval Office of the White House, in Washington, D.C., President Barack Obama addressed the nation on Sunday night about the threat of terrorism. During his televised speech, the president assured the American people that his administration is taking the strongest measures to keep the country safe.

The speech followed terrorist attacks in Paris, France, on November 13, and in San Bernardino, California, on December 2. The Paris attack was directed by the Islamic State, also called ISIS or ISIL. The FBI is investigating the San Bernardino attack, which Obama said was a terrorist attack that appeared to have been inspired by ISIS. In his speech, Obama spoke about the steps the government is taking to stop ISIS around the world and in the U.S.

“The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it,” he said. “We will destroy [ISIS] and any organization that tries to harm us.”

Fighting Terror

The president noted that the U.S. has been in a war against terrorism since the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., on September 11, 2001. Since then, he said, U.S. military and intelligence agencies have gone after terrorists and stopped plots to harm Americans. But Obama said that the terrorists have entered a new phase. Now they are committing mass shootings and spreading dangerous ideas through social media. In this way, they can inspire people around the world to commit violent acts in their home countries.

The president vowed to continue air strikes against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and to also continue to train and equip forces in those countries to fight the terrorists on the ground. He also promised to cut off the financing of ISIS’s operations.

He also promised to cut off the financing of ISIS’s operations. He said the U.S. is working with its ally countries in the Arab world to stop the spread of extremist ideas that promote violence for political aims.

Standing Together

There are measures we can take in the U.S. to protect ourselves, Obama said. He called upon Congress to pass laws designed to prevent violent extremists from buying guns. The president also said that Americans must not, out of fear, turn against their neighbors. ISIS “does not speak for Islam,” he said, and we should not confuse that religion with terrorism. While he called on Muslim leaders to speak out against extremist ideas, and to promote tolerance and peace, he said it was the responsibility of all Americans to reject discrimination. “Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, our co-workers, our sports heroes,” Obama said. He added that Muslim-American men and women serve in the U.S. military and risk their lives to defend the country.

“We have always met challenges—whether war or depression, natural disasters or terrorist attacks—by coming together around our common ideals as one nation, as one people,” the president said. “So long as we stay true to that tradition, I have no doubt America will prevail.”
